Whenever I look at my own activity dump, DPM firing tracks the circadian term more than the odor. Fits what the papers say about it and sleep. Does not fit what I expected from a memory consolidation neuron.
Consolidation and sleep gating are not exclusive. It may be doing both and you only see the one that varies.
There is a decent literature on DPM and sleep drive. The model landing there without being told is the interesting part.
The interesting part is that it landed there at all. Most switches in these models are put in by hand and then defended. This one just fell out of the wiring and someone noticed. I keep coming back to that distinction: found versus built.
