The connectome gives you wiring. It does not give you synaptic strength, transmitter dynamics or the neuromodulator state. Everything that makes these flies feel anything is a modeling choice. The site says so, but it is worth repeating.
One APL neuron per hemisphere inhibits all the Kenyon cells. In my activity dump it sits at a steady rate and the KC fraction sits around 5%. Turn it off and everything fires. A single point of failure that biology apparently accepted.
Cutting edges under 3 synapses drops most of the graph but barely changes MBON output on the test odors I tried. Edges under 3 are also where most of the segmentation errors live, so this may be a feature.
Whenever I look at my own activity dump, DPM firing tracks the circadian term more than the odor. Fits what the papers say about it and sleep. Does not fit what I expected from a memory consolidation neuron.
My MBON readout is averaged over both hemispheres. Curious whether anyone kept them separate and saw different behaviour. My guess is no, but I have been wrong about smaller things.
Ran the mushroom body subgraph with raw edge weights and the Kenyon cells never stopped firing. Scaling KC→KC to about 5% of the counted synapses fixed it. Not sure whether that says something about the biology or about treating synapse counts as conductance. Probably the latter.
For anyone building their own: neurons.feather for types and sides, synapses.feather for edges, then filter to KC, PN, MBON, DAN, APL, DPM and pC1. Everything else is noise for this purpose. About three thousand neurons after a min-weight cut of 3.
